Where it all began

"What is teaching?"      The answer to this question evolves every day if you are a teacher who is experiencing the essence of teaching each passing day. Thus, as a teacher, I firmly believe that teaching is a never-ending expedition of learning. Although in many instances teacher's role is such that the very definition of a teacher is viewed as a practitioner, instructor, observer, examiner, and caretaker, if viewed from a different in-depth angle a teacher while sharing the knowledge and expertise evolves, as each passing day in a teacher's life is a new lesson to be learned. Therefore, my belief is that a teacher is a learner who is a forever learner and that these two processes: teaching and learning, are undetachable.       According to Furnish (2010), having a clear definition of teaching is essential because it influences teachers' actual practices in the classroom.                                                           The English teaching experience I obtained from my internship at Telford International School Galle, which ran from January 7 to February 6, 2024, was enlightening because it allowed me to reflect upon my teaching methods in a physical learning environment. During this period I taught for Grade 6 and 7 students: 4 classes, focusing on the Pearson Edexcel 6 and 7 books which they have been following. All classes comprised both male and female students who are bilingual, with Sinhala as their first language.          The teacher in charge Ms. Anika conducted the observations on the first and second week of my internship. Her feedback at the end of the practicum resonated deeply with me. She remarked, "Teaching a group of students while balancing theory and enthusiasm is no small feat, but your approach made learning theory a joy for them." These words have become a beacon, inspiring me in moments of doubt or weariness, guiding me as I navigate the enchanting realm of teaching.  In the enchanting realms of teaching-learning I found the real meaning of life, that gave life to a life,  "teacher you are the best thing that ever happened to me" said a sweet girl - an adorable gesture of love, "you are one of a kind," said another,  and the rest agreeing with smiles on their face, gleaming with adoration, at that point I realized,  positive reinforcement works for teachers as well,  and a teacher is anyway a forever learner after all. . .
